Fire prevention is the first step to protection. Most commonly, fires are always preventable when the correct controls are put into place. Workers require the correct SDS when handling flammable, combustible or explosive substances. They must also understand how to use a flame and what to do in the event of an emergency.
In case of a fire
Fires can occur in a multitude of different ways. Assuming that a fire did occur, the following stages must be followed by workers who are on site:
- Warn all others on site and call for help.
- Use the correct fire extinguisher if the fire is small.
- Electrical, propane or gas fires should be shut off from their supply.
- Fires that are too large to control, or are becoming too large, should be dealt with by the fire department. The area should be evacuated and a headcount/registration of those present carried out.
What about CRAMS?
CRAMS is a fully-featured software solution that can be used to understand and mitigate dangers at work. It allows you to manage risk assessments and method statements, with assessments linked to the SDS library so your staff can consult the manufacturer’s instructions on correct usage and procedure when using a substance.
You can also use CRAMS to address issues with staff competency through the use of online e-learning courses, and your entire workforce is able to report accidents, incidents and hazards, with the relevant people notified in real-time.
